Dr. Emily Wirth, DVM
Practicing Location: San Antonio
Professional Interests: Internal Medicine and Reproduction
Originally from San Antonio, Dr. Emily Wirth earned her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Texas Tech University, where she was a member of the equestrian team and gained hands-on experience through swine research. During her undergraduate years, she completed a semester-long internship in equine reproduction at Peterson & Smith, sparking her passion for veterinary medicine. She went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University in 2024. Dr. Wirth has particular interests in equine reproduction and sports medicine. Outside of work, she enjoys riding horses, reading, and spending time with her dogs.
Dr. Micaela Preston, DVM
Practicing Location: San Antonio
Professional Interests: Sports Medicine and Surgery
Dr. Preston was born and raised outside Memphis, Tennessee. She received her B.A. in Animal Science from the University of Tennessee in 2019, and continued on to receive her D.V.M. from the University of Tennessee in 2023. She completed a year-long Surgery Internship at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, and another internship at the Brazos Valley Equine Hospital in Salado. Outside of work, Dr. Preston enjoys riding horses, spending time with her husband, and exploring the great outdoors!
Dr. Mike Martin , DVM
Practicing Location: San Antonio
Professional Interests: Sports Medicine, Reproduction, and Colic Surgery
Dr. Mike Martin was raised in and around San Antonio. He showed horses early on but switched to rodeo throughout high school and college. He received a B.B.A from Southwest Texas State University in 1982 and returned to the family quarter horse breeding farm Alamo Stud. He managed the breeding farm until starting vet school in 1989 and received his D.V.M. in 1993 from Texas A&M University. He returned to the breeding farm but in 1993 and in 1995 he helped start Retama Equine Hospital with Dr. Byrne James, Dr. Tommy Hays, Dr. Robert Lewis, and Dr. Charlie Graham. He was an owner and the managing D.V.M. at Retama for close to thirty years. He retired in 2022 from practice until recently, when he was convinced by Dr. Ben Buchanan to join the team at Brazos Valley Equine Hospital- San Antonio. He is a past President of the Texas Equine Veterinary Association, a past President of the Texas Equine Foundation, and currently an Advisor for the Texas Equine Foundation. He is a member of TEVA, AAEP, TVMA, and the AVMA. His interests are Sports Medicine, Reproduction, and Colic Surgery.
